Into the mountains

Dino and I went up into the mountains today (Gran Sasso). We wandered around a small village (Santo Stefano di Sessanio). It also suffered destruction during the earthquake and work to restore the old stone buildings continues. 67 people live here, but the number swells during the summer. Most things were closed today. In winter this village would be covered in snow. It was 10 degrees today and summer is not far away!

We went a little further up the mountain to Rocca Calascio (castle)
The views were amazing. Luckily the rain held off until we were on our way back home but the wind was fierce at the top.

It is so amazing to see buildings hundreds of years old, I am not sure why they built a church way up here four hundred years ago. Well actually the sign (thankfully in English also) said it was in thanks to the 'Heavenly Mother' (now that is interesting) for saving them during an invasion.
